Laser Surgery Risks
Many times cosmetic laser surgery is done in an office not in a hospital. Outpatient & office surgery many times have different rules & standards than hospitals have.
As with any type of surgery, laser surgery is not without risks. Possible problems include incomplete treatment of the problem, pain, infection, bleeding, scarring, and skin color changes.
Some laser surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Be sure to discuss the risks of general anesthesia with your anesthesiologist.
Laser surgery can also be used to:
Remove tumors (brain, liver)
With minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue
With minimal scarring
Seal small blood vessels to reduce blood loss
Seal lymph vessels to reduce swelling and decrease the spread of tumor cells
Seal nerve endings to reduce postoperative pain
Remove warts, moles, and tattoos
Reduce the appearance of skin wrinkles
A large proportion of office surgery is now done for cosmetic purposes. For the most part, patients pay for these operations on their own, because many of the procedures are not covered by insurance. Thus, cosmetic surgery creates a considerable cash business, and it is attractive to many doctors who feel restricted by the financial limits of, and the delays in, health insurance reimbursements.
Unfortunately, the public in general has the perception that office surgery, like surgery in a hospital, is subject to a whole host of controls. However, nothing could be further from the truth. There are not only no rules for the performance of surgery in an office setting; there are no rules pertaining to which doctors can participate in which operations in this milieu. As Roy Nemerson, a prosecutor with the Board of Professional Medical Conduct of the New York State Department of Health, acknowledged in a telephone interview with Investigations Committee staff, a dermatologist could perform brain surgery in his garage if he could get a patient to agree to that.
